MN Secretary of State Steve Simon says Minnesota is NOT ready for Ranked Choice Voting statewide

At this morning's House hearing on HF2486, the MN Sec of State says more work needed to understand the more complicated voting system

When testifying last week at the senate committee hearing on SF2271, which was passed into the House, now being heard in the House on HF2486, it was mentioned that the MN Secretary of State, Steve Simon, had wanted to show up, but had another meeting.

But he did show up this morning to testify, and he said that Minnesota is NOT yet ready for statewide ranked choice.

While five cities have done ranked choice in previous elections, they have only done so in odd years, but not in even-numbered election years where a president or governor is on the ballot, as occurred in 2020 or 2022.

Simon said that ranked choice is more complicated and suggested more work be done first before passing legislation to allow ranked choice statewide.
